Two people were killed Monday evening when a motorcycle and a sedan collided at the intersection of Causeway Boulevard and Windermere Oak Lane in Riverview, turning an ordinary commute into a scene of devastation.

According to troopers, the crash happened around 5:38 p.m. as the sedan began a turn and the oncoming motorcycle slammed into the car with heavy force. The sedan’s driver was not hurt.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators identified the motorcyclist as a 31-year-old Riverview man and his passenger as a 33-year-old woman from Brandon. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The Toyota Avalon involved in the collision was driven by a 40-year-old Riverview woman who escaped injury, and investigators stayed on scene for several hours to document the wreckage and interview witnesses, according to Tampa Free Press.

Investigation under way

State troopers say early indications are that the Avalon turned left into the path of the motorcycle. Crash investigators are reviewing who had the right-of-way, analyzing vehicle damage and checking for any available witness or surveillance video as they work to reconstruct the moments before impact.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles offers crash-reporting information and instructions on how to obtain official reports while that work continues, according to FLHSMV.

Why these crashes matter

Intersections are a common setting for deadly motorcycle crashes. Bikes are smaller and easier for turning drivers to miss, and riders have almost no protection when something goes wrong. Late afternoon and early evening traffic can pack neighborhood arterials like Causeway Boulevard, which increases the chances of dangerous turn-into-path collisions.

How to share tips or get the report

Officials have not yet released the names of the two people who died, and troopers have not said whether any charges are being considered. Anyone who has video from the area or information about the crash is asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.

Crash reports and related documents can be requested through the state’s online crash portal, according to FLHSMV.
