A 22-year-old Deer Island man was killed Saturday night after his motorcycle was rear-ended on I-75 in Marion County, according to state troopers. The crash happened around 9:23 p.m. near mile marker 349, when the impact sent the rider into the path of another vehicle in the center lane. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead. Authorities said no one else was injured.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol crash report, the rider was heading south in the outside lane when a sedan struck the back of his motorcycle and pushed him into the center lane, where a sport utility vehicle then hit him. The report identified the rider only as a 22-year-old from Deer Island. Troopers told ClickOrlando that the wreck was at least the third fatal motorcycle crash in Central Florida that day.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators responded to the scene and have opened a formal investigation, which will be detailed in an official crash report. The state’s crash and citation report portal explains how investigators reconstruct collisions and how the public can request records; see FLHSMV for more information. Local troopers have not released the rider’s name, saying they are waiting to notify his family.
