Tommy "Hitman" Hearns, the Detroit boxing icon who punched his way to world titles in five weight divisions, is now under his eldest son’s legal watch after a bruising family dispute over his care and finances spilled into probate court.
A probate hearing in Oakland County wrapped up this month with an order placing Hearns under both guardianship and conservatorship, handing responsibility for his personal and financial decisions to his son, Ronald Hearns. The move followed concerns raised by relatives and social-services workers about whether Hearns was being moved against his wishes and whether his money was being mishandled.
As reported by FOX 2 Detroit, Chief Probate Judge Pro Tempore Daniel A. O’Brien presided over a March 11 hearing that ended with Ronald being appointed both guardian and conservator. Attorneys in court said the decision was intended to cool off family infighting and to tackle tax and bankruptcy problems tied to Hearns’ estate. Lawyers also credited Hearns’ sons for working toward a resolution after the judge pushed them to come to terms.
Coverage in the boxing press noted that an earlier emergency hearing in late February featured accusations that some relatives had hidden Hearns and that other family members told the court they did not know where he was. Boxing247 reported that Judge O’Brien demanded family members disclose Hearns’ location and described Hearns’ interview with WXYZ in which he said he was fine and wanted things to be calm. Those exchanges helped push the court to formalize oversight of his care and finances.
A guardian ad litem report filed in the case, according to The Detroit News, concluded that Hearns is unable to manage business and property matters because of cognitive decline and flagged possible financial exploitation. The report and court records pointed to bank statements and other documents that suggested Social Security benefits had been diverted and noted two GoFundMe pages created in Hearns’ name that brought in only small amounts compared with their stated goals. The Detroit News also reported that Hearns’ longtime Southfield home was seized by the Oakland County treasurer in March 2024 for unpaid property taxes after earlier foreclosure actions on the property.
What Guardianship Does And How It Works
In Michigan, guardianship and conservatorship give a court-appointed person control over an adult’s personal care and finances, with the probate court continuing to supervise what happens. What’s Next For Hearns’ Case
Attorneys involved in the case say the new conservatorship will let Ronald and his legal team sort through old debts, past property troubles and questions about where money went, while also making sure Hearns’ care is coordinated. Boxing coverage noted that attorney Wolf (Wolfgang) Mueller, who has represented family members pushing for oversight, said he planned to review Hearns’ income and debts to get everything above board. With Adult Protective Services involved and a referral to the Michigan attorney general's office mentioned in court records, the case could draw civil or criminal attention if investigators find evidence of exploitation.
For now, Hearns is living with family in the Detroit area and, by his own public account, is doing fine. The court order, however, shifts legal control of his affairs to a family member who must answer to the probate court for both his care and his finances. Expect follow-up filings in Oakland County Probate Court and possible statements from the Michigan attorney general if investigators decide to chase down the financial questions raised in the guardian ad litem report. The battle over Hearns’ future has also thrown a spotlight on how aging public figures, whose names and nest eggs can attract the wrong kind of attention, are protected in their later years.
