Detroit-Shoreway is about to get a serious caffeine upgrade. Vessel Coffee Collaborative is preparing to open at 5019 Detroit Avenue, bringing a multi-roaster specialty cafe to the stretch between Ohio City and Gordon Square. Inside, the team has gone all in on cozy: soft lighting, cushy seating and a small library designed to invite lingering over rare beans and experimental, cocktail-style lattes. Early plans include tastings, maker pop-ups and workshops meant to appeal to both die-hard coffee nerds and casual drinkers who just want something fun in the cup.
“We wanted a luxurious place where you can just sit and drink the best coffee you’ve ever had,” co-owner Jacob Digman said, describing a room the team prefers to call warm rather than maximalist, as reported by Cleveland Scene. The storefront at 5019 Detroit Avenue had been empty for roughly five years before the build-out. Now it is a joint effort among Digman, fellow coffee veteran Austin Fedor and local operator Cory Hajde, who say that after months of delays and an unexpected zoning change, they are finally in the home stretch before opening.
Rotating roasters and rare beans
The big idea at Vessel is a constantly changing lineup of small roasters from around the country, along with tastings and workshops to match, according to Axios Cleveland. The owners say they plan to bring in hard-to-find names whenever they can. One roaster they have already pointed to is Tokyo-based Glitch Coffee & Roasters, which Tasting Grounds lists as a Tokyo-based specialty roaster. The multi-roaster model is meant to keep the menu in constant rotation without tying the cafe to a single house roast.
Menu and hours
Vessel’s opening menu leans into both dessert-forward and savory experiments. The Cassata Cake latte blends oat milk with strawberry, raspberry and vanilla, while the Tahini Tickler pairs honey with sesame, Cleveland Scene reports. Alongside those more playful, cocktail-inspired creations, the cafe plans to serve traditional espresso drinks. Hours are set for 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays, with the owners stressing that presentation and taste carry equal weight in their concept.
Where it fits in Detroit-Shoreway
Vessel is opening into what has quietly become a west-side coffee boom. Ready Set! opened a brick-and-mortar spot on Detroit Avenue in 2021, and Atmos Coffee is expected to arrive this spring, outlets note. Cleveland Magazine covered Ready Set’s 2021 debut, while Axios Cleveland flagged both Atmos and Vessel as fresh additions to a corridor that already includes Gypsy Beans & Bakery along with other local operators. Even with that growing crowd, Vessel’s owners say they see space on the avenue for another thoughtful, community-minded shop.
What to expect
Guests can expect regular tastings, rotating maker pop-ups and artist features in a space the team has outfitted as a "Living Room." Local operator Cory Hajde lists Vessel Coffee Collaborative among his hospitality projects on his Linktree. The owners are planning a phased rollout once final tweaks are complete, with workshops and events following the initial opening as they ease the neighborhood into their version of a high-comfort coffee lab.
