An off-duty NYPD detective was taken into custody inside his own stationhouse in Downtown Brooklyn on Tuesday evening, booked on assault and harassment charges after colleagues placed him under arrest.
Local outlets identified the officer as 33-year-old Det. Paul Hoppinthal. He was arrested at about 8:30 p.m. inside the 84th Precinct, which serves Downtown Brooklyn and nearby neighborhoods, according to Brooklyn Eagle.
A Civilian Complaint Review Board closing report that lists Hoppinthal in connection with the NYPD Warrant Squad is posted on NYC.gov.
Where the arrest happened
The 84th Precinct stationhouse sits at 301 Gold Street in Downtown Brooklyn and patrols Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill and parts of the surrounding commercial district, according to the NYPD precinct page. The Brooklyn Eagle report said the detention occurred “within the confines of the 84 Precinct,” indicating the stationhouse itself was the scene of the arrest.
Charges and what comes next
Hoppinthal faces charges of assault and harassment. The initial coverage did not include details on his arraignment, bail status or any formal complaint filings.
Officers accused of crimes can also land in hot water with their own department. The NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau and civilian oversight agencies may review alleged misconduct, as outlined by the city’s Commission to Combat Police Corruption on its website.
We have requested comment from the NYPD and will update this story if the department responds. More information about the criminal case and any disciplinary moves is likely to emerge once prosecutors and the department release public documents or statements.
