After more than two decades on Malibu’s sand, Dr. Dre has quietly cashed out of his Carbon Beach perch, handing off his glass-walled waterfront home in an off-market deal that closed last week for $16.5 million.
The three-story house sits directly on the sand along Pacific Coast Highway, one of the more eye-catching properties on the strip. The off-market sale at $16.5 million was reported by Mansion Global, which identified the seller as Andre Young, better known to the rest of the world as Dr. Dre. He has owned the property since around 2000.
On the other side of the deal, property records and reporting identify the buyer as the founder and general partner of a Los Angeles-based home and apartment development firm, according to the Santa Monica Mirror. Representatives for the buyer did not respond to requests for comment, and a representative for Young could not immediately be reached, the outlet reports.
About the house
Built in 1993, the contemporary three-story residence spans about 8,843 square feet and includes six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, according to listing information on Redfin. Floor-to-ceiling glass lines the ocean side of the home, opening to multiple beach-facing terraces.
The amenities read like a checklist for a high-profile owner: a gym, a sauna, and a private recording studio tucked into the beachfront spread. From Carbon Beach, the property looks directly out over the Pacific, with the sand just steps from the back of the house.
Listing history and price context
Property records reviewed by the Santa Monica Mirror show Young bought the Malibu home in 2000 for roughly $4.75 million. The Real Deal previously reported that the property had a brief appearance on the open market in September 2011 and resurfaced for sale in November 2022 with a $20 million asking price before being pulled from public listings in December 2023.
On the brokerage side, agents tied to the sale include Kurt Rappaport of Westside Estate Agency and, according to reporting, Christopher Cortazzo of Compass. Representatives for the buyer and for Mr. Rappaport did not provide comment when contacted, according to earlier outreach by TMZ.
Carbon Beach has long carried the “Billionaire’s Beach” nickname for its cluster of celebrity-owned, oceanfront properties, and this latest deal is another reminder that some of the biggest trades here happen out of public view. For Malibu locals keeping score, the sale underscores how the beachfront market continues to lean on quiet, high-dollar, off-market transactions even as trophy homes quietly move from one deep-pocketed owner to the next.
