
A violent crash turned Atlantic Boulevard into a wall of smoke and sirens Sunday afternoon, as two vehicles went up in flames and four people were rushed to local hospitals. Two of those victims were reported in life-threatening condition, while two others suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The crash happened in the 5400 block of Atlantic Boulevard around 12:20 p.m., and crews moved quickly to knock down both fires. Police shut down the roadway between Empire Point Road and University Boulevard while they worked the scene.
What authorities said
According to Action News Jax, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported that officers responded to a crash in the 5400 block and immediately blocked Atlantic Boulevard from Empire Point Road to University Boulevard. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue told the outlet that two vehicles caught fire and both were extinguished. Four people were transported to area hospitals, with two patients in life-threatening condition and two others with injuries described as not life-threatening.

Drivers were told to steer clear of the area and brace for delays while investigators and cleanup crews worked to get traffic moving again. Atlantic Boulevard is a major east-west artery, and when it shuts down, nearby streets tend to feel the pain.
