The long-empty South Tampa corner that once housed neighborhood standby 717 South is finally coming back to life next Monday, when it reopens as The Landon with a contemporary American concept. The building, gutted by a fire in January 2024, has spent the past year being rebuilt and reimagined. Neighbors can look for a refreshed dining room, an expanded bar program and a chef-driven menu aimed at both date-night regulars and late-night crowds.
According to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, The Landon is slated to open next Monday after months of construction and what ownership described as “significant updates” to the footprint. The outlet reports that the layout has been reworked, higher-end finishes have been added and the bar program has been upgraded as part of the relaunch. Management has not released a full public menu ahead of opening, but has confirmed the space will operate as a full-service restaurant.
Chef Robert Hesse Takes the Helm
The Landon’s kitchen will be led by executive chef Robert Hesse, a veteran of multiple seasons of Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen,” according to the Tampa Bay Times. Hesse told the Times he plans to mix refined technique with playful street-food energy, with dishes that range from dumpling-style birria to elevated croquetas and wings finished with luxe touches. Those theatrical plates are designed to pair with a more ambitious cocktail and wine program than the location previously offered.
Menu Teases And The New Look
The restaurant’s site is already teasing select items, including a signature “717 Bread Service,” a nod to the building’s past that sits alongside a more modern menu. The Landon’s website also features hiring notices as staff training wraps up ahead of opening, plus reservation and contact information for diners already plotting their first visit. For the latest menus, hours and booking details, the restaurant directs guests to The Landon.
A Local Comeback
Owner Michael Stewart, who also operates nearby Ava, has framed the project as a personal comeback and told the Tampa Bay Times he named the new concept in honor of his son. The original 717 South was a decades-long fixture on South Howard, and its return under a new banner is drawing close attention from regulars and neighbors who hope the space keeps the convivial energy of the street while offering a more polished dining option.
What To Expect During Opening Week
During opening week, diners should expect a soft launch and limited seating as the team fine-tunes service and finishes training. The staff will be running service trials leading into the public debut. Guests can check The Landon or call the restaurant for reservation availability and walk-up policies. When it opens next week, The Landon will occupy the familiar Hyde Park/South Howard footprint and aims to function as both a late-night hangout and a full-service dining destination.
