A Friday night drive on Jones Sausage Road ended in tragedy with an SUV on its roof, four people rushed to the hospital and one passenger who did not survive. Now, police say the Garner man behind the wheel is facing a slate of felony charges tied to the deadly rollover.
The single-vehicle crash happened last Friday, and prosecutors on Wednesday charged Alberto Urieta-Calixto Jr. with felony death by vehicle and felony serious injury by motor vehicle, according to The News & Observer. The outlet also reported that Urieta-Calixto is charged with driving while impaired and consuming alcohol while underage. He was arrested at the scene and remains in custody as investigators continue their work.
Crash Scene And Victims
Garner police say officers were called out around 10:24 p.m. Friday after an SUV overturned on Jones Sausage Road near the town's Amazon distribution hub, shutting down the busy corridor for several hours. All four people in the vehicle were taken to WakeMed Raleigh for treatment, and two were initially reported in critical condition, as reported by ABC11.
WRAL noted that Urieta-Calixto was cited at the scene for driving while impaired and for consuming alcohol while under 21, even before the more serious felony counts were filed.
What The Charges Mean
Under North Carolina law, felony death by vehicle applies when impaired driving is the proximate cause of a death, and related serious-injury offenses are laid out in N.C.G.S. § 20-141.4. The North Carolina General Statutes spell out how felony death by vehicle and felony serious injury by vehicle are classified and punished in cases like this one.
Prosecutors say Urieta-Calixto will be processed at the Wake County Detention Center while investigators finish gathering evidence, according to The News & Observer.
Next Steps In The Case
Wake County prosecutors are expected to review the case file and move ahead with arraignment paperwork in the coming days as the investigation continues. Police say the crash is still under active review and have asked anyone with information or dash-cam video from the area to contact the Garner Police Department, ABC11 reported.
Local Context
Jones Sausage Road has seen several serious wrecks in recent months, including crashes near the I-40 interchange that drew local coverage and fresh calls for safety fixes along the corridor. Earlier coverage by a deadly February wreck in the same area highlighted how volatile that stretch has become as the Raleigh suburbs grow and traffic volumes climb. That pattern has raised new questions about roadway safety for people who live and work along the fast-developing route.
