Morning commuters along a northwest Las Vegas shopping strip got an unwelcome surprise Monday when gunfire broke out near a business on West Craig Road, sending one person to the hospital and another into police custody.
Officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded around 7:34 a.m. to the 4900 block of West Craig Road near Decatur Boulevard, where they found the wounded person and detained another individual at the scene. The cluster of storefronts was quickly taped off as detectives moved in, gathered shell casings and other evidence, and began talking to anyone who might have seen or heard what happened.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Metro said the shooting was reported at 7:34 a.m. and that one person was transported to a nearby hospital. Another person was detained by police, though officials had not released names or updated the victim's condition at the time of publication.
Detectives Dig Into Early-Morning Shooting
Per the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, detectives remained on scene as the investigation got underway, working to piece together what led to the gunfire and whether the people involved knew each other.
Metro's public information office lists 702-828-3111 for inquiries. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555 or through Crime Stoppers of Nevada.
Crowded Commercial Corridor Shaken Again
The 4900 block sits along a busy commercial stretch off Decatur that fills up early with drivers grabbing gas, coffee and breakfast from a row of strip malls and quick-serve restaurants. It is not the first time violence has rattled the area: in May 2024, a street fight in northwest Las Vegas left one person dead and two others injured, FOX5 reported.
What Neighbors And Drivers Can Expect
As the investigation continues, detectives are expected to canvass surrounding businesses for surveillance video and follow up with any witnesses who were in the parking lots or drive-thru lanes when the shots were fired.
Police presence remained visible in the area Monday morning, and drivers in the northwest corridor were told to expect brief delays and minor detours while investigators worked the scene and collected evidence.
