Investigators Comb Through Charred Wreckage
Deputy State Fire Marshals spent the morning at the scene, working to determine what started the blaze, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal. The agency noted that crews from Susquehanna Hose Company and surrounding departments answered the call and helped knock down the fire.
Officials have not yet said where in the home the fire began or whether anything suspicious is suspected, and the investigation remains active.
Smoke Alarm Spurs Daring Escape
One person managed to escape the burning home after being alerted by smoke alarms, according to WBAL NewsRadio. He told investigators he could not get out through the front door, so he jumped from a second-story window to escape the flames. He was not injured.
Fire crews and investigators remained on scene into the morning, sifting through debris and documenting the damage.
Deadly Blaze Hits Amid Regional Safety Push
The Havre de Grace fire comes as fire officials around the Baltimore region are already on high alert after a string of deadly residential fires this year. Crews have been going door to door, handing out smoke alarms and offering free safety checks, part of a growing effort to cut down on home fire deaths, according to WBAL-TV.
The cause of Wednesday’s fire remains under investigation, and authorities have not publicly identified the two victims. The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal has asked anyone with information about the incident to contact investigators as they work to piece together what happened inside the Erie Street home.
