A Houston mother says the Friday afternoon scramble at Gross Elementary in southwest Houston ended in every parent’s nightmare: her two young sons walked off campus with an adult she never authorized to pick them up.
She told local TV the boys were released during the usual end-of-day bustle and left school grounds with the unauthorized adult. The account has put fresh pressure on staff and families to take a hard look at how dismissal is handled and how closely pickup rules are followed.
According to KHOU, the mother said both boys were allowed to leave campus with an adult who was not on her approved pickup list. KHOU published its report Friday.
Where It Happened
Gross Elementary, a Houston ISD campus in southwest Houston, dismisses students each weekday afternoon, according to Gross Elementary. The school’s site also lists family resources for updating pickup information and contacting the main office.
School Pickup Rules and Safety
Across Houston ISD, campus information pages emphasize controlled entry and strict checkout procedures. One campus page notes, “All visitors to the building must report immediately to the Attendance Window” to obtain a visitor pass.
District materials also urge families to notify the main office of same-day transportation changes well before dismissal to prevent last-minute confusion and to give staff time to verify who is authorized to collect each child.
What Parents Can Do
Parents can help reduce the risk of mistaken handoffs by keeping their authorized pickup list current in PowerSchool and by notifying the school in writing when someone different will be collecting their child. Many campuses provide step-by-step instructions on family pages for how to update student contact and transportation information.
The mother told KHOU she hopes the campus closely reviews its dismissal procedures so that students are released only to adults who are clearly authorized to pick them up.
