The Renaissance Theatre Co. is back on its Princeton Street stage tonight, stepping into the spotlight in Ivanhoe Village after months offstage with a weeklong "Homecoming" run of parties, drag events, and special performances slated through next weekend.
According to Orlando Weekly, the Ren cleared its final inspections with the City of Orlando and was allowed to reopen after resolving the permitting issues that shut the venue down last autumn. "It’s a chance to come back home and be with one another while we work toward what’s next artistically," creative director Donald Rupe said in a press statement, the paper reports.
Homecoming slate kicks off Friday
Per the Renaissance Theatre Company's website, the Homecoming programming begins with an "Un‑Condemned" party on March 13 and features RuPaul's Drag Race watch parties, A Taste of La Mami on March 17, Off the Record: Hannah’s Version on March 18, a homecoming reception on March 20, and a Re‑Renaissance celebration on March 20–21. Tickets and the full schedule are posted on the Ren's site, where patrons can buy single-event tickets or season passes.
From condemnation to a temporary downtown lifeline
The Ren was ordered to vacate its Ivanhoe Village building last September after city inspectors cited life‑safety and permitting concerns, forcing the company to pause shows and remove sets, local reporting shows. The City arranged a short‑term lease downtown at 54 W. Church St., and the company staged holiday programming and the regional premiere of Mean Girls at that space while it worked through permits, according to Bungalower.
What reopening means
The Ren is known for immersive, large‑scale productions built on elaborate sets and flexible floor plans, an artistic style that complicated compliance with standard building codes during inspections. Orlando Weekly reported that permit updates changed the building's official occupant load and required an upgraded, voice‑capable fire alarm as part of the return‑to‑service work. For audiences, the reopening brings a major independent venue back to Ivanhoe Village; for the company, it restores steady box office and gives staff and artists a stable home after a stretch of uncertainty.
Tickets and information are available at the Renaissance Theatre Company's website and box office. Expect nightly events through the weekend as the company celebrates its return and settles back into its Princeton Street stage.
