Downtown Jacksonville did not just get a ballgame Friday night. It got a reveal. The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp opened their 2026 home season at a freshly renovated VyStar Ballpark, greeting fans with a supersized videoboard, revamped club spaces and a new street-level team store that changes how people move in and out of the park. Coming on the heels of the club’s recent on-field success, the home opener added extra buzz to an already lively sports complex.
Project NEXT: The upgrades fans can actually see
The makeover falls under Project NEXT, a city-funded renovation package of about $31.8 million that team officials and City Hall have billed as a modernization of the 2003 ballpark. According to Jax Daily Record, the work brought in a new center-field entrance, more premium club space behind home plate and a multi-level right-field building that now houses a street-accessible Jumbo Shrimp store at ground level with event rooms upstairs. Preseason coverage in the Florida Times-Union also pointed to rebuilt home and visiting clubhouses, refreshed concession areas and sharpened sightlines that were ready to go in time for Opening Day.
Opening Day: Fans, features and promotions
As shown in News4JAX's Opening Day look inside the park, fans streamed through the new center-field gate, stopped for photos under the expanded scoreboard and checked out the street-level shop from the sidewalk. The Jumbo Shrimp opened the 2026 slate at 7:05 p.m. Friday against the Rochester Red Wings, and the club’s season release touts dozens of fireworks nights, giveaways and family-focused promotions running through spring and summer. Many fans walked away talking about the added group and private-event spaces, which double as new hangout zones and shaded selfie spots along the concourse.
What the investment means for downtown
City officials and team leaders have pitched the publicly funded facelift as a way to drive more year-round life into the riverfront sports district by layering in banquet-ready rooms and premium hospitality areas. Local reporting notes that Project NEXT is the first major overhaul since the ballpark opened in 2003 and that it was sold as a strategy to keep the venue competitive for both baseball and non-baseball bookings; see Jax Daily Record for the full plan breakdown. The refreshed stadium gives downtown another amenity that can be activated beyond game nights, a potential boost for nearby restaurants, bars and hotels.
