A late-night argument inside a Kingsessing home turned deadly Thursday when a 30-year-old man was shot in the face and killed, police say.

The shooting unfolded around 11:30 p.m. inside a home on the 1100 block of South Peach Street in Philadelphia's Kingsessing neighborhood, after what investigators describe as a dispute between the man and his girlfriend. Medics pronounced him dead at 11:59 p.m., according to police.

According to NBC10 Philadelphia, Chief Inspector Scott Small said the argument "was verbal and possibly turned into a physical altercation." During that confrontation, police say a family member of the woman grabbed a handgun and fired a single shot, hitting the man in the face.

Investigators say the handgun is registered to the woman. Both she and the family member stayed at the scene and are cooperating with detectives, according to police. No arrests had been made as of early Friday while the investigation continues.

Kingsessing context

The killing adds to a recent string of violence in Southwest Philadelphia. The neighborhood has already seen other neighborhood shootings in recent months, and the area was the site of a deadly mass shooting in July 2023 that left five people dead, as reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer.

What police say

Police and medics found the victim unresponsive inside a second-floor bedroom and pronounced him dead at 11:59 p.m., investigators said. NBC10 Philadelphia reports that detectives have not yet released the man's name and are still processing the scene and interviewing witnesses.
