A Saturday evening ride on State Road 44 turned deadly when a motorcyclist was killed, and a pickup driver was seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash in Lake County. The wreck happened just before 8 p.m. east of Huff Road, when troopers say an eastbound Ford F-650 suddenly drifted into the westbound lane and slammed into an oncoming motorcycle. The bike erupted in flames, the rider was thrown from the seat, and a trailing SUV then partially struck him.
What troopers say
According to troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol, the eastbound Ford F-650 crossed over the center line on State Road 44 and collided head-on with a 2023 Indian Roadmaster motorcycle, setting the bike on fire on impact. As WESH reports, the force of the crash hurled the rider into the path of a 2017 Toyota Highlander that had been traveling behind the motorcycle, and that SUV then partially struck the rider. Troopers said the crash remains an active investigation.
Victims and response
As reported by ClickOrlando, the motorcycle rider, a 39-year-old man from Tavares, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford F-650, a 27-year-old man from Hobe Sound, was transported to HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Toyota, a 63-year-old woman from Apopka, was not hurt. The Highway Patrol has not publicly released the names of anyone involved.
Statewide context
According to the FLHSMV 'By the Numbers' report, 589 motorcyclists were killed in Florida in 2024, accounting for roughly 18.5% of all traffic fatalities statewide that year. The number is a stark reminder of the dangers riders face on busy routes where large trucks and SUVs share the same pavement as two-wheeled traffic.
The Highway Patrol has not yet said why the Ford veered into oncoming traffic, and investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash, per ClickOrlando. Troopers said additional details will be released as they become available.
