A late-night garage fire in a Cary townhome community ended in tragedy Saturday when firefighters discovered a person dead after knocking down a small blaze. Cary Fire Department crews responded to reports of smoke around 10:45 p.m. on the 200 block of Anniston Court and quickly brought the fire under control. Police and fire investigators say they are now working to identify the victim and determine what sparked the fire.
According to WTVD, crews found the person during a search of the garage after the flames were out. In its early report Sunday morning, the station noted that no additional details had been released and that authorities had not yet made the victim's name public. Cary officials had not issued a formal statement beyond information from the initial response at the time ABC11 published its story.
Investigation and response
Cary police and fire investigators stayed on scene Saturday night and into Sunday, processing the home and collecting evidence from the garage area. The Town of Cary urges anyone with information to contact the police department and lists the non-emergency line at (919) 469-4012 for tips and inquiries. Officials have not said whether any charges are anticipated or when they expect to release the victim's identity.
Why garage blazes can be especially dangerous
The U.S. Fire Administration notes that garage fires often spread farther and cause more injuries and greater property loss than fires that start in other parts of a home. The agency recommends keeping flammable liquids stored away from the residence, avoiding the use of extension cords for high-wattage appliances, and installing a heat alarm in the garage instead of a standard smoke detector. Residents with questions or concerns about fire risks are encouraged to contact their local fire department for guidance tailored to their home.
Authorities have not released further details about the person's age or sex. We will update this story when Cary officials release more information.
