A late-night high-speed chase through La Porte ended with a man in the hospital with critical injuries early Friday, according to Galveston County deputies.
The pursuit started just after 1:30 a.m. on State Highway 146 and ran along one of the city’s main arteries before wrapping up at a gas station near Highway 146 and Wharton Weems Boulevard. Deputies said the driver was hurt after falling out of his truck at the end of the chase. A gun was later found inside the vehicle. Authorities have not said what led them to try to stop the truck in the first place.
Click2Houston reported that deputies described the man’s injuries as critical and confirmed investigators recovered a firearm from the truck. Deputies also repeated that the chase kicked off shortly after 1:30 a.m.
Where The Chase Unfolded
State Highway 146 cuts through a busy stretch of La Porte, and it carries the kind of traffic volume that makes any pursuit especially dicey. North of Wharton Weems, the roadway sees roughly 32,000 vehicles a day, according to the City of La Porte traffic report. Those counts climb north of the intersection, which is one reason crashes and high-speed chases on SH 146 can have outsized impacts on other drivers and nearby businesses.
Pursuit Policy And Safety Concerns
High-speed law-enforcement chases have come under growing scrutiny because of the danger they pose to everyone involved, including people who are simply driving nearby. Human Rights Watch has documented deadly trends in vehicle pursuits in Texas. Guidance from the International Association of Chiefs of Police calls for restrictive policies that require officers to weigh immediate public-safety risks before deciding to initiate or continue a chase.
What Investigators Are Saying And Not Saying
So far, investigators have not released the suspect’s name or announced any charges. Deputies also have not publicly explained why they initially tried to pull over the truck, according to Click2Houston. The early details shared with the media largely mirror deputies’ on-scene account, and officials often hold back additional information until hospital and booking records are processed.
Authorities and local outlets are expected to release more specifics as the case moves forward, including any charges that might be filed and updates on the man’s condition.
