Portland-born beer hall Loyal Legion is gearing up to land in downtown Vancouver this spring, bringing its high-tap, draft-first playbook to a former longtime brewpub anchored by a roomy patio. The move will add another draft-heavy stop to Washington Street, and the team is already rolling out a string of community pop-ups as a sneak peek. Loyal Legion plans to lean into Washington breweries while keeping the familiar casual lineup of sausages, burgers, pretzels and shareable plates that regulars already know.
Pop-ups and timeline
As reported by the Portland Business Journal, the Loyal Legion crew is staging patio pop-ups to introduce Washington beers and test service ahead of the full opening. The Washington Beer Blog has noted that the group is targeting an April opening, with pop-up programming potentially starting as early as February, featuring events that spotlight Washington breweries that do not always distribute into the Vancouver market. Those preview nights are meant to help the team dial in service and the taplist while building local buzz around the new spot.
Where it will go
ChefStable has purchased Heathen Brewing’s former Feral Public House at 1109 Washington St, a roughly 10,000 square foot property with a main room of about 5,000 square feet and a covered 2,300 square foot patio, according to New School Beer + Cider. Heathen closed the Feral Public House in October, and the Loyal Legion team says the remodel will open up the high ceilings and refresh the large outdoor space for year round use. With an existing kitchen, liquor license and built-in patio infrastructure, the site is unusually ready for a high-capacity beer hall in the heart of downtown.
Who’s behind the Vancouver outpost
The Loyal Legion concept is operated by ChefStable and founder Kurt Huffman, the restaurateur behind a string of Portland-area spots. Loyal Legion’s own site lists locations in southeast Portland, Beaverton and at PDX Airport, and describes the brand as centered on big draft counts and a focus on local breweries. “We feel unbelievably lucky,” Huffman told New School when discussing the purchase and plans for the Vancouver location.
Why Vancouver
Industry watchers say Loyal Legion’s arrival lines up with a broader push to activate downtown Vancouver’s restaurant and beer corridor, where recent moves such as Breakside’s downtown expansion have signaled growing momentum. The city’s tourism pages already list Loyal Legion as “coming soon,” and local beer outlets say the new pub will slot into a growing network of draft-focused venues that aim to make downtown more walkable and beer-friendly. For Loyal Legion, the Vancouver project extends its mission to showcase Pacific Northwest breweries by folding more Washington-made beers into the mix.
What locals should know
Locals can expect early pop-ups to be announced on Loyal Legion’s own channels and through local event listings, with the company directing curious customers to its website and social media profiles for dates and details. For now, the team plans to use those preview events to fine-tune a Vancouver-specific taplist and to introduce neighbors to how the space will function once the doors officially open this spring.
