A Huron County man is facing a felony charge after his 71-year-old mother was rushed to a hospital, unresponsive, and later died, with medical staff reporting severe, untreated bedsores crawling with live maggots. Authorities say the case represents an unusually stark example of alleged caregiver neglect in the rural county. The son, identified in jail records as 41-year-old Oval C. Jarvis, is accused of failing to provide basic care while his mother was under his supervision.

Scene And Charges

According to the Huron County Sheriff's Office, deputies were notified on March 1 at about 6:20 p.m. that the woman had been brought to a local hospital. Medical staff reported her clothing was heavily soiled with urine and fecal matter, and that she had deep bedsores with maggots living in them.

Deputies then went to the Hume Township home that the two shared. Jarvis allowed two officers inside, where they reported finding what they described as a deplorable scene of filth, including garbage, fecal matter and urine throughout the residence. The sheriff's office arrested Jarvis on a felony count of vulnerable-adult abuse in the second degree. He was booked into jail, later posted bond, and was then formally charged by the Huron County prosecutor's office as the investigation moved forward, according to KEYE.

What The Charge Means In Michigan

Under Michigan law, vulnerable-adult abuse in the second degree applies when a caregiver's reckless act, or reckless failure to act, causes serious physical or mental harm to a vulnerable adult. The offense is a felony punishable by up to four years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000, according to the Michigan Legislature.

To secure a conviction, prosecutors must prove that the victim suffered serious physical harm or serious mental harm as a result of that recklessness. As in every criminal case, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Statewide Context

Advocates and state officials have long warned that elder neglect is widely underreported, and Michigan's own numbers suggest a heavy caseload. The Department of Health and Human Services' Adult Protective Services annual report shows that APS received 57,504 referrals in fiscal year 2024 and investigated roughly 21,137 of them, with about 41 percent substantiated, according to the MDHHS report. The figures highlight how heavily many vulnerable adults rely on others to report suspected abuse or neglect.

What’s Next

Huron County officials say the investigation remains open, and more details could emerge as the prosecutor's office continues its review. Jarvis is entitled to the presumption of innocence while the case proceeds, and court dates or additional filings were not immediately available, according to KEYE.
