Eighteen months after a medical emergency at a Marion home left a three-month-old fighting for life, police have charged the child's father with murder and felony child abuse. The case stems from the early-morning hours of September 12, 2024, when officers were called to a residence on Carroll Street. Authorities say the accused, Timothy Michael Blake Thorne, was already locked up on an unrelated matter and is now being held without bond.
Marion officers arrived just after midnight on Sept. 12 to find the infant unresponsive in a bedroom with the mother. First responders began lifesaving efforts at the home before the child was taken to McDowell Hospital, then transferred to Mission Hospital in Asheville. The infant later died at Mission Hospital, according to FOX Carolina.
Following what investigators describe as an 18-month inquiry, detectives identified Thorne as the suspect and formally charged him with murder and felony child abuse. He was already in jail on another charge when the new counts were served, and he is being held without bond at the McDowell County Jail. Police announced the charges on Wednesday, according to the Tampa Free Press.
Investigation remains active
The Marion Police Department says detectives are still combing through case files and reviewing evidence to determine whether additional charges are warranted. Investigators have not publicly shared what specifically led to the homicide charge, citing ongoing follow-up work as the case moves forward, according to FOX Carolina.
Legal process ahead
Thorne faces state murder and felony child-abuse counts and will remain in custody while prosecutors and court officials map out the next steps in the criminal case. Investigators are still gathering material as prosecutors decide on formal filings and work out court scheduling, the Tampa Free Press reports.
