A late-night moped stop in Midtown Manhattan turned into a brief foot chase and a gun recovery after officers tried to pull over an unregistered ride moving through a school corridor zone, police said.
According to NYPD Midtown North, officers noticed the moped did not have a license plate late Friday night and moved in to stop it. The first attempt led to what the precinct described as “a brief struggle,” after which two people took off on foot.
The precinct said both individuals were caught after a short chase. During a later canvass along the route the moped had taken, officers recovered a loaded firearm, according to the same post.
Unregistered mopeds and e-bikes have become a recurring flashpoint across New York City, with repeated enforcement actions and plenty of neighborhood complaints about sidewalk riding, theft and safety concerns. Reporting by amNewYork and coverage by Streetsblog has documented frequent seizures and ongoing community disputes over how the NYPD classifies and handles mopeds and similar vehicles.
Potential legal exposure
Under New York law, having a loaded firearm in public can be prosecuted as criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, a Class C felony under New York Penal Law §265.03. If prosecutors decide to bring those charges and secure convictions, defendants face substantial prison time along with long-term collateral consequences that can ripple through employment, housing and other parts of daily life.
Investigation and where to send tips
The precinct’s social media post did not identify the two people taken into custody or indicate what charges, if any, had been filed, according to NYPD Midtown North. Anyone with information or video related to the stop or the recovered gun can find contact details for the Midtown North precinct on the NYPD’s official website.
