Motown Museum is rolling out the first major public exhibit inside its Esther Gordy Edwards Centre for Excellence, and it is diving straight into the trip. Psychedelic Soul: A Journey Through Rhythm And Time traces the label's late 1960s to mid 1970s pivot into experimental, socially conscious sounds and will run from April 17 through September 27. The multi-room show gives Detroiters a fresh way to experience artifacts and immersive displays, while guided tours of the original Hitsville U.S.A. building remain paused during the museum's campus expansion.
According to the Motown Museum, the exhibition will be installed inside the Esther Gordy Edwards Centre for Excellence and is scheduled to be open Wednesday through Sunday with extended summer hours. The museum's event page lists the April 17 opening and a September 27 closing date and lays out both regular and summer schedules for visitors.
What You'll See
Inside, the museum is promising rare vinyl pressings, vintage fashions and immersive multimedia that chart how Motown leaned into psychedelic soul. Fox 2 Detroit reports the show zeroes in on the 1967 to 1975 period and highlights producer Norman Whitfield and acts such as The Temptations in defining that sound.
The Centre's Role
The Esther Gordy Edwards Centre for Excellence functions as the museum's new programming and education hub, occupying roughly 38,000 square feet a couple of blocks west of the Hitsville house, Hour Detroit reported. The outlet noted rehearsal rooms and workshop space for Hitsville NEXT on the first floor and plans for archive and research space upstairs to support youth programming and scholarship.
Tours and the Expansion
Guided tours of Hitsville U.S.A. remain paused as the museum works through a multi-phase expansion, but the Esther Gordy Edwards Centre lets Motown keep welcoming guests with curated exhibitions in the meantime. As a last-chance warning on Hitsville tours from Hoodline reported, the pause is part of a broader plan to grow the campus into a nearly 50,000 square foot cultural destination while keeping Hitsville NEXT and community programming active during construction.
Planning Your Visit
The exhibit opens on April 17, and tickets, hours, and box office information are available on the Motown Museum events pages. Visitors should note that docent-led Hitsville tours will be paused through the expansion as the museum prepares for a full campus reopening in Spring 2027.
