A man was found dead Thursday evening on a busy downtown Los Angeles sidewalk, turning a familiar corner near Pershing Square into a full crime scene. Bystanders reported the unresponsive man at the intersection of 5th Street and Broadway, and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The Los Angeles Police Department responded and opened an investigation, and authorities have not yet released the man's identity.
Scene Near Pershing Square
As reported by KTLA, officers found the man outside a small market on the corner, where paramedics tried to help him before he was declared dead. Investigators said he was believed to be in his 60s or 70s, and the sidewalk was cordoned off while detectives worked the area. Police set up a canopy over the body as they collected evidence and spoke with witnesses.
The corner sits roughly a block from Pershing Square, an area that has long been a focal point of downtown activity and of the city's unsheltered population. Human Rights Watch has documented rising risks for older unhoused residents in Los Angeles, noting that overdoses, chronic medical conditions, and exposure are among the leading causes of death.
Investigation Underway
Officers kept the sidewalk sealed off and the canopy in place while detectives processed the scene, and officials did not immediately release a cause of death. According to KTLA, investigators were canvassing the neighborhood and reviewing nearby surveillance footage.
Authorities have not announced any arrests and have not released additional details about the man's identity or the cause of death. The investigation remains active.
