If you rely on Streetsboro’s main crossroads to get anywhere, traffic is about to get a lot more interesting. Starting this spring, city and state crews will rebuild the busy intersection of State Routes 14 and 43 and repave long stretches of both roads near the new City Hall. Officials say the work will last about nine months and include overnight shifts and detours that could push regular traffic onto the Ohio Turnpike.

As reported by News 5 Cleveland, crews will tear out and replace concrete across the intersection, a job that touches ten lanes of traffic. They will also repave Route 14 from the Ohio Turnpike to the square and Route 43 from Market Square Drive south to Twin Lakes. The intersection has not been repaved in about 20 years, so this is a deep rebuild, not a quick scrape-and-pave job.

Mayor Glenn Broska has been selling the construction as the final piece of a budding downtown anchored by a new City Hall, a splash pad and a recently opened fire station. According to City of Streetsboro materials, officials expect Gateway Green, a gazebo and an inclusive playground to sit at the heart of the redesigned square, giving the city a central spot for small concerts and community events.

What crews will do

The Ohio Department of Transportation will oversee the square rebuild and a set of safety tweaks, including removing the westbound slip lane at Route 303 and adding a signal at Ranch Road, according to local reporting. The Portager reported that city council signed on to the ODOT plan, which carries a roughly $6.7 million price tag split among federal, state and city funds. City officials told the Ravenna Record-Courier that Karvo Paving of Stow submitted the lowest bid for the work.

When and how you’ll be affected

Most of the heavy construction is scheduled for overnight hours to keep daytime traffic from completely melting down, but the overall timetable runs into early January 2027, according to reporting on the council authorization. Local outlets say Mayor Broska has urged drivers coming from Ravenna and points south to use Route 44 and the Ohio Turnpike to steer clear of the worst backups near the square.

On top of that, the Page Road bridge over the Ohio Turnpike is set to close for roughly four months beginning March 2 while the turnpike operator repairs the span. Detours will be posted for local access, as covered by WNIR.

Local businesses and outreach

Business owners around the square say they are bracing for a hit to foot traffic while the cones and backhoes move in. The Ravenna Record-Courier captured concerns from nearby shops including Rita’s Italian Ice, where owners worry that detours and delays could keep regulars away.

City officials say they plan to roll out detour maps, tweak school bus routes and coordinate signage to keep residents and customers circulating as smoothly as possible. For details on timelines, traffic control or construction contacts, the Engineering Department lists staff and contact information on the City of Streetsboro site.

City leaders argue the short-term headaches will be worth it if the result is a safer, more walkable center that can finally host regular events and small concerts. “This whole center of town will basically be brand new,” Mayor Broska said, as reported by News 5 Cleveland.
