A Milwaukee father is facing a jury in the deadly shooting of his 4-year-old son, a case that has gripped the city’s north side and rattled neighbors who say they saw warning signs long before police arrived.
Ralph Michael Taylor Jr., 35, sat before jurors on March 9 as opening statements began in Milwaukee County Circuit Court in connection with the July 10, 2025 death of his son, 4-year-old Ralph Taylor III. Family members and neighborhood residents have been tracking every development as testimony gets underway.
Prosecutors say they plan to show the boy was shot during a domestic dispute inside the family’s north-side apartment, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The outlet reports Taylor is charged with first-degree intentional homicide and related weapons offenses, and that jurors were selected Monday before lawyers delivered opening arguments.
Court records say officers were dispatched around 9:35 p.m. on July 10 to 9139 N. 75th Street, where they found the child unresponsive in the doorway of a third-floor bedroom. A blood-stained GLOCK wrapped in plastic was recovered inside a Rubbermaid container, along with a Crown Royal bag holding 96 rounds of 9mm ammunition, according to the Bay News 9 copy of the criminal complaint. The document also quotes neighbors and a child witness who said Taylor had been drinking that day, and records one bystander recalling Taylor saying, “I got to hide my guns” as others tried to help the boy.
Early hearings and local coverage highlighted how sharply the case has struck officials and residents. A Milwaukee County court commissioner described the alleged act as “an assassination,” and neighbors told reporters the household had a history of domestic conflict, according to CBS 58.
Charges and what prosecutors allege
The criminal case filed in Milwaukee County charges Taylor with first-degree intentional homicide and possession of a firearm by a felon. The charging document, filed with the court and made available by Bay News 9, cites Wisconsin statutes that call for a mandatory life sentence on the homicide count, with additional penalties tied to the use of a dangerous weapon.
Prosecutors have also charged the boy’s mother, Casandra Taylor, with neglect resulting in death and with straw-purchasing a firearm. She has pleaded not guilty and has a status conference set for March 10, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
What’s next
With a jury now seated, prosecutors are expected to begin calling police investigators and neighborhood witnesses as the trial moves into its evidence phase. Testimony is likely to dig into what was happening inside the apartment that night and how the firearm ended up near the child.
Both Ralph Michael Taylor Jr. and Casandra Taylor remain presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in court. The judge is scheduled to reconvene the case for the March 10 status conference and then continue with witness testimony and scheduling as the proceedings unfold.
