The northbound 110 Freeway in Gardena turned into a construction-site nightmare early Tuesday when a cement truck overturned, spilling its load across multiple lanes and grinding the morning commute to a halt. Several northbound lanes were shut down near the El Segundo Boulevard exit after wet concrete and debris coated the roadway. Responders pulled the driver from the wrecked truck and took them to a local hospital while crews scrambled to clear the mess.
Crash response and lane closures
According to CBS Los Angeles, the California Highway Patrol reported that cement from the overturned truck was scattered across several lanes, and cleanup crews were called in to tackle the heavy material. The CHP issued a SigAlert at El Segundo Boulevard and warned that the main lanes would stay closed until further notice, leaving only the FasTrak/express lane open to drivers stubborn enough to brave the backup.
When and where it happened
Per ABC7, the crash was first reported at about 4 a.m. near the El Segundo Boulevard exit. Officers said they were still investigating how the truck ended up on its side. In the meantime, motorists were urged to steer clear of the area while tow crews and Caltrans teams worked to scrape concrete and debris off the freeway.
Alternate routes and what drivers should expect
With the northbound 110 choked off, officials told drivers to consider hopping over to the northbound 710 or northbound 405 as alternate routes while the cleanup continued, according to CBS Los Angeles. Commuters were warned to expect heavy backups approaching the El Segundo Boulevard exit and to pad their travel time as crews worked through the morning to reopen the shuttered lanes.
