A reported sighting of a person with a weapon in a parked vehicle put The R.E.A.L. School in Sturtevant on lockdown Friday afternoon, turning an ordinary school day into a tense waiting game that lasted close to an hour. According to the Racine Unified School District, students who were outside the building told staff they had seen someone with a dangerous weapon inside a vehicle in a nearby parking lot, TMJ4 reported. Law enforcement was called in, the area around the school was secured and students and staff were ordered to stay put.
The precautionary lockdown lasted roughly 45 to 60 minutes before it was lifted. No one was injured, and authorities said there was no active threat to the public, according to WISN 12. Officials also said no dangerous weapons were found during the search and there was no threat inside the school building itself, the district told TMJ4.
Drivers and nearby residents were asked to steer clear of the immediate area while the investigation was underway. For families, it meant an anxious stretch of waiting for updates that, fortunately, ended with an all-clear.
How Authorities Responded
The Racine County Sheriff's Office led the on-site response and investigation. Deputies and other responding agencies secured the scene, checked the reported suspicious vehicle and swept the surrounding area. The scene was cleared just before 4 p.m. Friday, according to TMJ4.
The Village of Sturtevant disbanded its police department in November 2025, and the Racine County Sheriff's Office now handles law enforcement services there, FOX6 Milwaukee previously reported.
