Spring training at the Phillies complex in Clearwater got uncomfortably real on Sunday when reliever Daniel Robert collapsed during a bullpen session and had to be taken to a local hospital after his implanted cardioverter-defibrillator activated. Club officials said he is awake and in stable condition, and that trainers and medical staff on site reacted immediately. The scare stopped the morning workout cold and left a rattled clubhouse watching and waiting.
ICD Fired, Team Says; Player Hospitalized
In a statement to the New York Post, the Phillies explained that Robert’s implantable cardioverter-defibrillator was triggered during the session, prompting his transport to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. According to the club, he remained stable while under observation, and team medical personnel will continue to track his condition.
Trainers' Quick Response Echoes October Scare
NBC Sports Philadelphia previously detailed a frightening Oct. 31 incident in which Robert collapsed, prompting Phillies trainers to begin CPR and use an external defibrillator to stabilize him before an ambulance took him to the hospital. Doctors later described the cause as an "unknown cardiovascular event." As that reporting notes, Robert underwent extensive testing afterward and had an ICD implanted in January before being cleared to pitch again. "I owe everything to them," Robert told NBC Sports Philadelphia as he prepared to return to the organization.
How Robert Got Back To Camp
Robert re-signed with Philadelphia on a minor league contract in early February and reported to spring training as a non-roster invitee, according to MLB Trade Rumors. He broke into the majors with the Phillies in 2024 and returned to the big club in 2025, when he logged 15 appearances out of the bullpen and finished with a 4.15 ERA.
What Comes Next For Club And Player
The organization has said it will continue medical testing and monitoring before determining Robert’s next steps, and potential roster decisions figure to hinge on those evaluations. The episode again highlights how quickly on-site medical care can shift the outcome in a crisis, and Phillies staff have been credited with rapid action both in this latest scare and after last fall’s collapse.
For now, Clearwater’s attention is squarely on Robert’s recovery and the doctors’ review. The Phillies have not put any timetable on his return to throwing and say they will share further updates as they come.
