A 39-year-old pickup truck driver from Howard Beach, New York, was killed Wednesday evening after his vehicle ran off Interstate 76 in Portage County and crashed into a disabled semi-trailer parked on the shoulder, according to troopers. The collision happened on eastbound I-76 near milepost 46 in Edinburg Township at about 6:24 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities have not yet released his name.
Crash Details
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a disabled 2026 Freightliner Cascadia 126 pulling a 2017 Hyundai trailer was stopped on the right shoulder when a 2024 Ram 3500 towing a 2024 Kaufman trailer veered onto the shoulder and struck the parked trailer. Troopers said the pickup left the right side of the roadway before impact. The crash is being investigated as a fatal traffic incident, and the patrol is leading the effort to determine the cause and any contributing factors.
Response and Investigation
The semi driver was in the sleeper cab at the time of the crash and was taken to a hospital in Ravenna with minor injuries, according to WKYC. Local responders included the Edinburg Township and Palmyra Township fire departments, the Portage County Coroner's Office, crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation, and tow operators who later removed the damaged vehicles. Troopers said they are holding back additional identifying information until they notify family members and wrap up initial forensic work.
Local Context
This stretch of I-76 near State Route 14 through the Edinburg area has had its share of trouble recently, with multiple incidents and periodic lane restrictions reported this winter. ODOT has been posting travel advisories when crews are on scene or crashes shut down lanes. Hoodline previously noted a January closure and reopening of I-76 eastbound after an earlier Portage County crash, a reminder that problems on this corridor can quickly snarl daily commutes. Officials continue to urge drivers to slow down and move over for stopped emergency and commercial vehicles whenever it is safe to do so.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the investigation remains active and is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dash-cam footage from the area to contact the Portage County post. Officials said they expect to release more information once next-of-kin notifications are complete and on-scene work is fully reviewed.
