A 71-year-old man died early Wednesday after a fall from his motorcycle in Philadelphia’s Port Richmond neighborhood turned suddenly tragic. Police say the rider was heading south on Aramingo Avenue when he came off his bike, got back to his feet and checked on the motorcycle, then collapsed a few minutes later.
A civilian at the scene tried to revive him with life-saving measures until medics arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at about 6:04 a.m., according to officials. Police said an investigation is underway into what caused his collapse.
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, the fall happened around 5:53 a.m. on the 3800 block of Aramingo Avenue. The station reports that authorities had not immediately released the rider’s name as investigators worked the scene and gathered information.
Aramingo Avenue Has a Recent History of Crashes
Aramingo Avenue has seen its share of serious wrecks in recent months. In December, a crash on the 3500 block killed a 44-year-old woman and critically injured two others, according to FOX29.
Statewide numbers paint a grim picture for riders. In its 2023 Crash Facts and Statistics report, PennDOT lists 238 motorcyclist deaths in 2023, one of the highest tallies in recent years. Those figures have helped fuel rider-safety campaigns and training programs across Pennsylvania, though city officials have not linked those efforts to Wednesday’s incident.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have not yet released the rider’s identity or an official cause of death. NBC10 Philadelphia reports that investigators stayed on scene Wednesday morning, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses as they worked to piece together what happened.
