Northbound Interstate 25 in Lone Tree turned into a predawn parking lot early Sunday after a multi-vehicle crash near the Lincoln Avenue interchange left at least one person dead and the morning commute in shambles. A heavy police and emergency response shut down the northbound lanes while crews worked the scene, triggering backups across the south-metro corridor.
The crash happened around 5 a.m. at the Lincoln Avenue interchange on I-25 northbound, and Lone Tree officials said they expected the roadway to reopen within the hour, according to KDVR. The station reported that officials urged drivers to steer clear of the area because of the significant police presence, and authorities did not immediately release a cause of the crash or an exact count of those injured.
Not the Only Serious Crash on I-25 This Season
This stretch of I-25 has seen multiple deadly and large pileups this winter, including a February crash near Pueblo that killed five and injured dozens during sudden brownout conditions, per deadly dust blast. Officials have increasingly pointed to weather and visibility problems as factors in multi-car chain reactions along the interstate corridor.
Traffic Impact and Safety Reminders
Drivers in south-metro Denver were told to brace for delays and look for alternate routes while investigators remained on scene. Past closures in Lone Tree have shown how quickly traffic can stack up, and authorities regularly direct travelers to COtrip for live conditions and closure details, as Denver7 has reported. If you were nearby and captured video or witnessed the crash, that kind of footage often becomes key evidence for police trying to reconstruct what happened.
Officials have not released the identities of those involved or additional details about injuries. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lone Tree Police. This story will be updated as investigators release more official details.
