Redwood Road was once again the scene of tragedy on Wednesday, when a pedestrian was hit and killed near the 1500 South block in Salt Lake City, according to officials. Emergency crews responded to the crash and pronounced the person dead at the scene, briefly shutting down lanes and rerouting drivers while investigators combed through the area.
According to KSL-TV, Lt. Dan Davis of the Salt Lake City Police Department said the incident remains under active investigation. KSL reported that officers diverted southbound traffic at California Avenue and Redwood Road and redirected northbound traffic at 1700 South and Redwood Road while they processed the scene. Authorities have not released the victim’s name or any further details about how the collision occurred.
Redwood Road Has a Dangerous History
Redwood Road, also designated State Route 68, has built a troubling reputation for pedestrian crashes in recent years, and neighborhood advocates say its wide, fast lanes are a big part of the problem. Reporting from KUER notes that lowering speed limits on busy corridors has cut down on pedestrian deaths. That same report found Redwood Road accounted for more pedestrian fatalities in Salt Lake County last year than any other single street. Groups like Sweet Streets have been pressing city leaders for slower speed limits and more protected crossings in hopes of preventing scenes like Wednesday’s from becoming routine.
Investigation and What Police Say Now
Salt Lake City police say the crash is still under investigation and no charges have been announced. Investigators are reviewing evidence gathered at the scene and will determine the next steps in the case. Anyone who has photos, video or information related to the collision is asked to contact the Salt Lake City Police Department.
