A 65-year-old man was killed Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash west of Marion, turning a rural crossroads into a multi-hour accident scene as troopers shut down the road and hustled victims to local hospitals.
The collision happened around 3:50 p.m. at the intersection of State Routes 309 and 37. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a 2008 Pontiac G6 and a 2017 Buick Enclave were involved, and the Pontiac failed to yield at a stop sign before it was hit. Troopers said the Pontiac then left the north side of the roadway and struck several traffic signs and a concrete post, as reported by WBNS.
First responders pronounced a man dead at the scene. Another person was airlifted to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, officials said. The driver of the Buick and three passengers, including two juveniles, were taken to Marion General Hospital with what troopers described as minor injuries.
Where It Happened And County Context
The wreck took place at the crossing of State Routes 309 and 37 west of Marion, a stretch listed in state road inventories maintained by the ODOT. A Marion County fatal crash summary shows deadly collisions scattered across the county in recent years, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Investigation Ongoing
Troopers said investigators have not yet determined whether alcohol, drugs or distraction played any role, and the crash remains under investigation. According to WBNS, the highway patrol has asked anyone with information or video related to the incident to contact the Mount Gilead post.
State and local crews reopened the intersection later Friday after clearing debris and wreckage. Troopers said investigators were still processing the scene. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ohio State Highway Patrol or local law enforcement.
