A smoke shop robbery on Wednesday in San Antonio ended with a man stabbed and a suspect now facing an aggravated robbery charge, in what authorities say is part of a troubling pattern at small tobacco and vape retailers across the city.
According to KENS5, San Antonio police say the suspect stabbed a man inside the smoke shop during the holdup, then was booked on an aggravated robbery charge. Detectives told the station the investigation remains active as they work to determine whether anyone else was involved.
Smoke Shops as Frequent Targets
Business owners and police say the open layout and late operating hours at many smoke and vape shops can make them tempting spots for quick-hit robberies. In mid-February, KSAT reported that suspects fired shots during an armed robbery at a 24-hour dispensary on Pleasanton Road, and the owner shared security footage with the station.
What Aggravated Robbery Means in Texas
Under Texas law, a robbery that results in serious bodily injury or involves a deadly weapon can be charged as aggravated robbery, which is a first-degree felony. The Texas Penal Code defines the offense in Texas Penal Code §29.03, and the punishment range for first-degree felonies is set out in Texas Penal Code §12.32.
What’s Next for the Case
The suspect has been formally charged and the case is now headed into the Bexar County court system, KENS5 reported. Police have not yet released a court date, and investigators say the probe is still ongoing.
