Sirens and search boats converged on Falls Lake on Saturday after a report of a possible drowning near the Cheek Road bridge, authorities said. Search and rescue crews staged on shore and on the water, sweeping the inlet into the evening while officials kept public details to a minimum during the active response.
According to WRAL, the Wake County Sheriff's Office said deputies received a report of the incident near the Cheek Road bridge and that the Durham County Sheriff's Office and the Northern Wake Fire Department were assisting on scene. The sheriff's office described the call as a "possible drowning" while crews coordinated search and recovery efforts, WRAL reported. Officials did not immediately identify any victims or share additional details.
Search Teams and Local History
Falls Lake has been the site of multiple drownings in recent years, and local authorities routinely warn that open-water conditions can conceal abrupt drop-offs and submerged hazards, according to ABC11. In past coverage, the sheriff has stressed that the lake "isn't like a swimming pool" and that small mistakes or unexpected currents can quickly turn fatal. Dive teams and marine units from county and neighboring agencies are regularly called in for searches and recoveries at Falls Lake.
How Visitors Can Stay Safer
Wake County's recent Swim Smart campaign urges boaters and swimmers to wear personal flotation devices, stick with a buddy, and designate a focused "water watcher." Officials say wearing a life jacket, avoiding alcohol, and keeping an eye on changing weather and fading light are among the simplest ways to cut risk on open water. Visitors are also reminded that remote coves can limit visibility and delay rescue responses.
Authorities said the response and any investigative work were still underway, and they did not immediately release further information. Updates are expected if the sheriff's office publishes new details.
