Mean Grille, the brightly colored Mediterranean restaurant on Richmond Avenue, served its final meals Monday after roughly two years in the Greenway/Upper Kirby neighborhood. A farewell note from the owner on social media capped a brief but well-liked run on the block.
As reported by the Houston Chronicle, owner Onur Palamut used an Instagram post to ask customers to “stop by and say goodbye.” He told the paper by phone that he partly blamed a lack of support for small businesses for the decision to close. The Chronicle also reported that Monday was Mean Grille's final day in operation and that Palamut declined to share further details.
Origins and menu
Mean Grille opened in the former Thai Cottage Greenway space in late 2023, according to Houston Food Finder. The restaurant's website highlighted scratch-made dishes and halal proteins, and the menu focused on kebabs, falafel, hummus and other Mediterranean staples, per Mean Grille.
Community reaction
Regulars did not take the news quietly. The Houston Chronicle noted comments such as “Oh no! You will be dearly missed!” and messages from diners who said the restaurant “will always have a special place in our hearts.”
A tough market for independents
Mean Grille's exit comes amid a steady wave of restaurant closures across Houston over the last year, a pattern local outlets have tracked. Houstonia and other coverage point to rising costs and shifting customer habits as ongoing pressure on small, owner-run spots.
For now, the lights are off at the Richmond Avenue space and Mean Grille's brief tenure in the neighborhood is over. Local diners are left with memories of its kebabs and the bright interior that stood out on the strip.
