On Thursday on San Antonio's South Side, a shuttle ride turned into a heart-stopping rescue when the driver bolted into traffic to snatch a toddler from a busy road. The tense moment, caught on the vehicle's dashcam, unfolded in seconds and left the driver visibly shaken.
According to KSAT, the driver is Michelle Gallegos, who said she was terrified when she spotted the child alone along a South Side thoroughfare. In video produced by Katrina Webber and published March 19, 2026, Gallegos is seen pulling the shuttle over and heading straight for the toddler. KSAT reports that her quick move "may be the reason the child is alive."
How the rescue unfolded
Dashcam video shows the shuttle jolt as Gallegos reacts, then stops and jumps out. She reaches the toddler, grabs the child from the roadway and guides them toward the curb as cars continue to pass. Gallegos later called it "some of the scariest moments of her life," according to KSAT. In the short clip she quickly checks on the child before returning to the shuttle, all in just a few seconds.
Drivers stepping in across the country
Gallegos is not alone in suddenly playing rescuer from behind the wheel. CBS News has aired footage of a Milwaukee bus driver scooping up a barefoot toddler running along a busy street, and ABC News has shown a bus operator stopping to help another wandering child. Together, the clips highlight how transit workers can be pulled into first-responder roles in an instant.
What we don't yet know
For now, the clearest look at the San Antonio incident is the station's dashcam footage. KSAT's report centers on the rescue itself and does not include follow-up information on how the child was reunited or whether authorities released additional details. For parents and caregivers, the brief clip doubles as a pointed reminder to secure gates and closely watch young children near busy roads.
