A Bexar County judge on Friday, March 20, 2026, sentenced 26-year-old Alberto Ferrer Cabrera to 40 years in prison for killing his partner, 81-year-old Donald Atha Weynandt. Authorities say Weynandt died after his throat was cut with a knife.
Sentence and confession
According to a news release from the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, a judge handed down the 40-year sentence on Friday, March 20, 2026, as reported by News4SanAntonio. The release says Cabrera confessed on Feb. 1, 2025, telling a 911 dispatcher, his landlord and responding detectives that he had killed Weynandt. Prosecutors say he offered no clear motive, stating only that he felt "stressed" about transporting his 4-year-old son from Colombia to the United States. Cabrera will serve the rest of his sentence in the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, according to the release.
How the killing unfolded
The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Weynandt's death a homicide caused by a sharp force injury to the neck, and police said the killing occurred in the 100 block of Felisa Street on San Antonio's South Side, per KSAT. San Antonio police detained Cabrera for questioning at the scene and later charged him in connection with the death, according to court records.
Prosecution and reaction
Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Brittany Mitchell and Angela Payne of the Family Violence Division led the prosecution, supported by victim advocate Marina Winter and investigator Yvette Guerrero, the DA's release stated, according to News4SanAntonio. "Mr. Weynandt deserved to live out his life in safety and dignity," District Attorney Joe Gonzales said in the statement.
What comes next
With the sentence in place, Cabrera will be moved into state custody to begin serving the 40-year term. The DA's office says the Family Violence Division remains focused on cases involving elder and domestic violence as this case transitions fully into the prison system.
