A Sterling Heights house party shooting case hit a wall today when a key witness never showed up in court, leading prosecutors to dismiss all charges against a 23-year-old Detroit man. The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said the case can only move forward if charges are reauthorized.
What Happened At The Party?
The shooting unfolded on Jan. 10 after an argument at a home in Sterling Heights spilled outside. Four people were shot, though authorities said none of the injuries were life-threatening, and a guest returned fire, wounding the suspected shooter, according to ClickOnDetroit.
Arraignment And The Charges
Back in January, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office arraigned 23-year-old Duan Giovanni Bradley on three counts of assault with intent to murder, three felony-firearm counts and one count of carrying a concealed weapon; bond was set at $1 million, according to a Jan. 12 press release from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office. At the time, Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said, "Behavior has consequences, and we will pursue accountability to the fullest extent of the law."
Why The Case Stalled
On March 23, prosecutors dismissed the charges when a key witness failed to appear in court, a procedural setback that left the office unable to proceed. For the case to be revived, prosecutors would have to reauthorize charges and secure testimony or additional evidence, ClickOnDetroit reports.
Where This Leaves The Investigation
The dismissal pauses county prosecution but does not necessarily end the investigation; reauthorization can come if prosecutors line up witnesses or new evidence. Hoodline previously covered the January arraignment in its January arraignment coverage.
Prosecutors have not announced whether they will refile charges, and the case remains under investigation by Sterling Heights police and the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.
