A driver in a U-Haul that police say was reported stolen Thursday was detained Friday after the box truck was involved in three separate collisions across Rockville and the White Flint area of Montgomery County. According to police, the truck lost a front wheel along Rockville Pike and later became disabled near Montrose Road, where officers took the driver into custody in the 1700 block of East Jefferson Street. Officials say the detached wheel hit another vehicle during the chain of crashes as officers worked to secure the scene.
Sequence of collisions, police say
According to DC News Now, the first crash was reported at Strathmore and Rockville Pike. The U-Haul, which police say had been reported stolen Thursday, continued north on Rockville Pike when its front wheel detached. Police say the loose wheel then struck another vehicle at Nicholson Lane while the truck kept moving and later became disabled after crossing Montrose Road.
Driver ran from the scene and was taken into custody
Police say the truck was involved in a third collision at Josiah Henson Parkway and East Jefferson Avenue before the driver got out and ran. Officers located and detained the suspect in the 1700 block of East Jefferson Street. Authorities have not yet released the driver's name or said whether charges have been filed.
Police request witnesses as investigation continues
Montgomery County police asked anyone with dash-cam or surveillance video to contact detectives, according to DC News Now. Investigators are working to determine how the truck lost its wheel and to piece together the full timeline of the crashes.
