A routine traffic stop on the southbound New York State Thruway in the Village of Mamaroneck turned into a scare for law enforcement Sunday when a New York State trooper was hit by a car, according to state police. The trooper suffered minor injuries, was taken to a local hospital, then released. The crash briefly slowed traffic and forced lane closures during the afternoon commute.

Crash details

It started when two troopers pulled over a Mercedes sedan along the Thruway. During that stop, a Chevrolet Suburban rear-ended the marked patrol car, which then slammed into the Mercedes. The impact pushed the Mercedes into one of the troopers, who was evaluated at a nearby hospital and released with minor injuries. The investigation remains ongoing, as reported by PIX11.

State police safety warning

The New York State Police have been sounding the alarm for months about exactly this kind of crash. After a string of incidents on the Thruway involving stopped emergency vehicles, the agency has repeatedly urged drivers to follow the Move Over Law. In a Feb. 9 press release about a separate Thruway crash, the agency said more than 2,500 Move Over citations were issued in 2025 and reminded motorists to slow down and change lanes when safely possible, per the New York State Police. Officials also warn that poor visibility and winter road conditions can raise the risk for officers working on the shoulder.

Who is involved and what is next

PIX11 identified the driver of the Mercedes as 52-year-old Siiyer Walker of Connecticut and the operator of the Suburban as 24-year-old Kevin Ariel Cunache Moyolema, also of Connecticut. State Police said there were no immediate arrests and asked anyone with information to contact Troop T's public information office. The investigation is ongoing, and officials say more details could be released as they become available.
