An 81-year-old man who helped run a longtime Thornton home daycare is facing a felony child sex assault charge after police say he abused a child in his care throughout 2025. The home operation, known locally as Vickey’s Daycare, has since closed. Investigators say there may be additional victims, and the suspect surrendered to authorities on March 6 before later bailing out of jail.
According to The Denver Gazette, Thornton Police Department officers arrested David Chambers, 81, and the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has charged him with “sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, pattern of abuse.” Police said Chambers is the husband of a licensed home daycare provider and helped with day-to-day operations. The outlet reports that Chambers turned himself in to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office on March 6, was booked into the county jail, and later bonded out.
Where police say the abuse took place
In a post on X from the Thornton Police Department, investigators said the alleged abuse occurred while Chambers was providing daycare services from his residence in the 4200 block of East 114th Avenue. Police told reporters the daycare, Vickey’s Daycare, had been in operation for more than 40 years at two previous locations before closing. The department is asking anyone with information to contact the Thornton police tip line at (720) 977-5069.
