A major gas leak near Shaw Road and Northpointe Boulevard sent Tomball residents scrambling indoors Wednesday afternoon, as authorities ordered a shelter in place and put four Tomball ISD campuses into "secure mode." Firefighters and emergency crews flooded the intersection while gas company crews were rushed to the scene. Neighbors were told to stay inside, shut doors and windows, and, if possible, turn off their air conditioning units to limit any exposure.
What officials said
According to FOX 26 Houston, Tomball Police reported that a main gas line had been struck in the area. The Tomball Professional Firefighters Association posted that crews were working at Shaw Road and Northpointe Boulevard, with CenterPoint Energy responding to address the leak. Authorities instructed people in the immediate area to remain indoors until the scene is cleared.
Tomball ISD confirmed that four campuses were placed in secure mode as a precaution: Tomball Memorial High School, Wildwood Elementary, Canyon Pointe Elementary and Oakcrest Intermediate.
Safety steps and reporting
The City of Tomball’s guidance notes that mercaptan is added to natural gas so leaks are easier to detect by smell. Residents who notice a gas odor are urged to report it to the city at 281-290-1400, or 281-351-5451 after hours. Officials also warn residents to avoid anything that might create a spark, such as starting a vehicle engine or flipping light switches, until first responders give the all clear; see the City of Tomball for more details.
What to expect next
FOX 26 Houston reported that officials had not yet provided a timeline for lifting the shelter in place order, and that crews were still on scene working to secure and repair the damaged gas line. Residents and drivers are being asked to steer clear of the Shaw Road and Northpointe Boulevard area while emergency activity continues and to follow instructions from local authorities.
