PennDOT’s long-planned Market Street bridge rehabilitation has officially pushed into the station area this week, shrinking lanes and shifting traffic patterns that will reshape daily routines through early summer. The reduced capacity on Market and 30th streets is scheduled to stick around through Monday, June 1, 2026, and officials are telling drivers and riders to budget extra time and strongly consider transit while the work is underway, as per NBC10 Philadelphia.
What PennDOT is doing
According to PennDOT, the $148.9 million contract covers a major rehab of several Market Street bridge structures that carry traffic over Amtrak rail lines, Interstate 76, the Schuylkill River, the Schuylkill River Trail and CSX railroad tracks. Crews will partially demolish and replace the superstructure near Schuylkill Avenue, redeck the Market Street bridge over the river, and swap out a four-span bridge on the river’s east side for a single-span structure. The project is funded roughly 80% with federal dollars and 20% with state money and includes upgrades for people on foot and on bikes, such as a separated two-way bike lane, new traffic signals and improved lighting.
Closures drivers should expect
As reported by NBC10 Philadelphia, lane restrictions that began Wednesday, March 25 will stay in place through Monday, June 1, 2026, in the blocks surrounding 30th Street Station. Southbound 30th Street is closed and detoured between JFK Boulevard and Market Street, and westbound Market Street is squeezed down to a single lane between Schuylkill Avenue and 30th Street. Access is not gone entirely, though: 30th Street remains open for limited access to the station’s west portico. Drivers aiming for Market Street near 32nd Street are being routed to turn right onto JFK Boulevard to get into the station area.
When the worst impacts hit
PennDOT’s project page notes that overnight closures and lane reductions on westbound I-76 near 30th Street are already in effect and will continue into June, a kind of warmup act for the bigger traffic headaches to come. A roughly 14-month, full closure of Market Street to vehicles is planned to start in August 2026. PhillyVoice reports that those later stages are expected to be the most disruptive, with occasional weekend-long full closures of I-76 to allow accelerated bridge construction. PennDOT says the long Market Street closure will pause for the city’s 250th-anniversary events, with no travel restrictions from June 1 to Aug. 7, 2026.
How to get around
Amtrak and SEPTA services at 30th Street Station are still accessible, but anyone getting dropped off, picked up or driving through should expect delays and shifting curb access near the west portico. NBC10 Philadelphia notes that PennDOT is steering drivers to use JFK Boulevard to reach Market Street near 32nd Street and is urging travelers to build in extra travel time. Riders who have the option are being encouraged to lean on trains, trolleys or nearby bus routes, especially during peak construction hours.
Timeline and improvements
The overall project kicked off in March 2025 and is expected to run for about four years, with the current phase of deck work and utility relocations continuing into mid-2026. PhillyVoice and PennDOT note that the finished package is set to deliver wider sidewalks, upgraded lighting and a separated two-way bike lane that should better connect Center City and University City. Officials say the goal is to extend the bridge’s lifespan and improve safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, even if it means a couple of very long years for anyone stuck in traffic in the meantime.
