A Wednesday evening commute just east of the Las Vegas Strip turned deadly when a pedestrian was struck and killed at a busy neighborhood intersection, police said.
The collision happened around 6:15 p.m. at Twain Avenue and Hazelwood Street. Emergency crews responded but pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene, according to authorities.
What Police Said
Officials with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said the driver involved stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Impairment is not suspected, according to FOX5.
Metro's Collision Investigation Section is handling the case, and detectives were working the scene Wednesday evening as traffic backed up along Twain.
A Familiar Problem
Pedestrian crashes have become a grimly familiar headline in the valley. A recent sidewalk slaying near Paradise and Twain highlighted what safety advocates say looks more like a pattern than a fluke.
Statewide numbers help explain the concern. Nevada recorded 419 traffic fatalities in 2024, and a large share of pedestrian deaths happened where there was no crosswalk, according to Zero Fatalities Nevada.
Road Closures And Traffic
In the immediate aftermath of Wednesday's crash, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada shut down Twain Avenue in both directions between Hazelwood Street and Palos Verdes Street while police investigated, officials said, according to FOX5.
Drivers heading east of the Strip were warned to expect delays until crews finished clearing the scene and detectives wrapped up their on-site work.
