Chris Mack is packing his bags for Tampa. The veteran coach was officially introduced Wednesday as the new head coach of the University of South Florida men's basketball program, taking over a team fresh off a rare NCAA Tournament appearance and looking to prove it was no one-year wonder. Rob Higgins, USF's chief executive for athletics, rolled Mack out as the Bulls' 13th head coach and the man expected to keep the postseason momentum alive at the Yuengling Center.
Mack arrives with head-coaching stops at Xavier, Louisville and, most recently, the College of Charleston, along with a track record that is about as subtle as a full-court press. He has posted 12 seasons with at least 20 wins in 15 years as a head coach, according to Tampa Bay 28. His best NCAA Tournament run so far came when he steered Xavier to the Elite Eight in the 2016–17 season, per Xavier Athletics.
What the AD and Mack said
Higgins called Mack a fast-working roster builder who knows how to navigate the transfer portal and jump-start a program in a hurry. "He brings elite experience in roster building through the portal and transforming programs in a short time frame," Higgins said in a statement highlighting Mack's reputation in both the portal and traditional recruiting, as reported by Tampa Bay 28.
Mack, for his part, leaned into the opportunity in front of him. He said he was "truly excited for the opportunity to lead a South Florida basketball program that's on an exceptional trajectory" and made it clear he is eager to connect with Bulls Nation and the roster that helped turn the Yuengling Center into one of the louder spots in town last season.
Where this leaves the Bulls
The hire comes on the heels of a quick coaching shuffle. Bryan Hodgson left USF on Sunday to take the head-coaching job at Providence, according to Wikipedia. Hodgson had just led the Bulls to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012, per South Florida Bulls, so Mack steps into a job with expectations that feel a lot higher than they did even a year ago and a relatively tight timeline to keep the upward arc intact.
What’s next
On day one, Mack's to-do list is already crowded. He will need to build an on-campus staff, target players in the transfer portal, and settle the program's offseason rhythm well before fall workouts begin. USF Athletics posted the splash announcing Mack's hire and noted that more details on his staff and key dates will land in the coming days.
For Bulls fans, the message is simple: USF is betting big on experience. Mack's history of quick turnarounds and portal savvy is now the foundation of the program's next chapter. Expect roster news and staff additions to dominate Tampa hoops chatter as Mack settles into the Yuengling Center and tries to prove that last season's NCAA trip was the start of something, not a one-off.
