What started as a routine property check at a Hickory grocery store ended with a wanted Conover man in custody and on his way to the hospital.
Hickory police say officers found a vehicle parked at the Food Lion on Springs Road yesterday and, after checking it out, located a man inside. He was arrested at the scene and later taken to an area hospital for a medical evaluation. Police identified him as 37-year-old Johnnie Lee Roy Lail of Conover.
How The Arrest Unfolded
According to the Hickory Police Department, officers were conducting a property check just before 10:00 a.m. when they came across a suspicious vehicle parked at the Food Lion at 3220 Springs Road NE.
Police say they repeatedly tried to communicate with the person inside but got no response. Officers eventually entered the vehicle, found Lail, and took him into custody at 12:17 p.m. He was then transported to an area hospital for a medical evaluation, according to the department’s post.
Warrants And Records
Public records indicate Lail has a criminal history that includes a 2009 kidnapping conviction and placement on the state sex offender registry, according to registry data and online court records. OffenderRadar and registry excerpts list prior convictions and registration details tied to a Conover address.
Those records line up with the department’s statement that Lail was wanted on multiple felony warrants at the time of his arrest.
