Detroit police are looking for a suspect who broke into a pickup on the city’s west side and walked off with a handgun, medications and several credit cards, authorities say. The early-morning break-in happened Feb. 15 on the 1400 block of Holden Street, and investigators say the suspect took off in a white Chevrolet Tahoe. The case remains under investigation, and detectives are asking anyone who knows something to speak up.
What Police Released
According to CBS Detroit, investigators say a male suspect of undisclosed age broke into a GMC Sierra sometime between about 3 and 5 a.m. and took a handgun along with a black bag holding medication, eyeglasses and credit cards. Detroit police released still images showing the suspect and the white Tahoe believed to be the getaway vehicle. Detectives say those photos could be key to putting a name to the face or tracking down the SUV.
Reward And How To Report Tips
The city’s Detroit Rewards TV page lists the case as a larceny in the 1400 block of Holden and notes a $500 reward for information. The portal urges anyone with video, photos or eyewitness details to submit an anonymous tip through the city’s system. Investigators say even small clues, like a partial license plate or a quick dash-cam clip, can help move the case forward.
Why This Matters
Guns stolen from vehicles are a major pipeline of firearms that later turn up in crimes, according to research by Everytown for Gun Safety. The group’s analysis of FBI data found that in 2022 at least one gun was stolen from a car every nine minutes on average, with the rate climbing sharply in recent years. The Associated Press has also quoted the ATF warning that stolen guns “are going straight to the street,” highlighting the broader risk cases like this pose for neighborhoods.
How To Help
If you recognize the man or the white Chevrolet Tahoe shown in the released images, police ask you to call the Detroit Police Department’s 3rd Precinct at 313-596-1340 or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-773-2587, as reported by CBS Detroit. Tipsters can also upload video or photos through the city’s online portal linked from the Rewards TV page. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities say they will release further updates as new information comes in.
