A routine traffic stop on Highway 57 in Zavala County on March 22 turned into a major drug bust when deputies uncovered a concealed package that officials say held about 18.44 kilograms, or roughly 40.6 pounds, of suspected methamphetamine. Authorities estimate the haul has a street value of more than $1.4 million. The driver of a brown Buick was arrested and taken to the Zavala County Sheriff's Office, while three children who were in the car were removed and kept in a climate-controlled setting during the investigation. Investigators say the suspected drugs were hidden behind the vehicle's radiator in a bundle wrapped in black tape and secured with bale wire.
What Deputies Found
According to investigators, a sheriff’s deputy initially stopped the Buick for multiple traffic and equipment violations. The deputy noticed several warning signs and saw that the children inside the vehicle were not properly restrained. Officials say the driver agreed to a search of the car. A Texas Department of Public Safety K‑9 then alerted to the front bumper, which led officers to pop the hood and take a closer look. Tucked behind the radiator, they say, was a large bundle wrapped in black tape and bound with bale wire.
Authorities report that the package tested as about 18.44 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, which they estimate at roughly 40.6 pounds and worth more than $1.4 million on the street. The driver was taken into custody following the discovery, as reported by News 4 San Antonio.
A Pattern of Large Seizures in South Texas
The Zavala County stop is just one in a recent series of large methamphetamine seizures in South Texas this month, underscoring stepped-up interdiction efforts on the region’s highways. On March 4, the Texas Department of Public Safety said troopers discovered nearly 1,980 pounds of meth hidden in a false floor beneath a commercial trailer near George West. That load was given an estimated street value of about $3.4 million, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
In a separate case, federal prosecutors in the Western District of Texas announced in February that a Homeland Security Task Force seized more than 550 kilograms of meth during an investigation in San Antonio. Officials said that operation highlights how multi-agency teams work together on large-scale drug cases, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas.
Legal Outlook
So far, authorities have not announced formal charges tied to the Zavala County stop, and the driver remains in local custody. Investigators say the case is being handled in coordination with Homeland Security Investigations, which could pursue a federal inquiry depending on the evidence and prosecutorial decisions, as reported by News 4 San Antonio.
Officials say the bust highlights how local sheriff’s deputies, state troopers and federal task forces are working side by side to intercept large shipments of illegal narcotics on rural South Texas highways. Zavala County authorities report that the investigation is still active and that the driver’s name has not been released while inquiries continue.
